The legality of ripping audiobook CDs to mp3s for personal use my be iffy but my local librarian asked me to show her how to do it when I mentioned it to her. Libby is a very nice app and it makes it much easier to search for and check out audiobooks than it was with Overdrive (although Overdrive was not hard to use by any means) but I know they are making the change to stop DRM free audiobook access through libraries.Īll of that being said, all libraries in my area and I suspect most libraries still have large collections of audiobooks on CD sets which you can check out and transfer to your devices as mp3s. Libby makes it next to impossible to access borrowed audiobooks as mp3s and therefore to play them with anything other than the Libby app. Unfortunately audiobook access through libraries is being "upgraded" from Overdrive to Libby "for the borrower's convenience. Old mp3 player, cellphone with your favorite audiobook player, or even a backup hard drive so that you could listen to them later (even after you've returned them to the library). Many libraries offered card holders access to their audiobook downloads via Overdrive which made it very easy to borrow and download the books as mp3s and then transfer them to whatever device you wanted. This is going to get MUCH harder to do when borrowing from libraries. This one does require using software to remove drm. Last put I can't not mention it: no one can beat Audible for selection (sometimes because of unfair exclusive contracts). They really need to drop their prices and drop the pricing games.) (GA's ubiquitous "sales" are less of a deal than it is a waiting game until you hope you get one that's good enough.
This is one of the better ones they offer. Their current sale is 40% off of everything. GraphicAudio has mp3 and other such non-DRM formats available as an upsell on all titles. Google around for other people's experiences so you don't have to reinvent the wheelĭownpour is like audible but smaller selection and most books are drm-free.
If you've got the time to take some chances, you might find some gems. LibriVox is free, drm free, and exactly the kind of hit and miss quality you'd expect when everything is free. Some libraries offer this and it's free when they do.
